Medieval minstrel

Although Caldas is a toponym common to both Galicia and Portugal, given the placement of the compositions from this author in the italian aphographs, it’s possible that he was a galician minstrel, whose activity would have developed in the middle or final 13th century. According to Resende de Oliveira1, one Martim Pais de Caldas is mentioned in the 1258 royal inquiries, in the jurisdiction of Penafiel de Bastuço (Barcelos). We don’t have, however, any other data allowing us to identify him as this minstrel. As far as Galicia is concerned, Ron Fernández3 recently (2018) discovered in Tombo C1 of the Cathedral of Santiago, in a document dated 1256 and in another one from 1264, a Martin Pelagii de Caldis who could be this minstrel.Bibliographic references
