Afonso Soares Sarraça

Medieval troubadour

Bibliographic notes

Galician troubadour, son of Soeiro Aires and Maria Afonso, the illegitimate daughter of King Afonso IX of Leon. The lineage would be based in Cerdedo de Montes, the location of the Oseira monastery, that some documents related him to. He participated, together with his brother Pero Soares, in the conquest of Seville, in whose Repartimiento their names appear. He was married to Teresa Anes de Deza, having been referred as still living in the latter’s will, dated 1262, a document that also names their sons, Fernão and Mor Afonso, already adults at this time. His period of activity should then be around the middle of 13th century.
