Medieval troubadour

This trobadour should perhaps be identified as Estêvão Peres Coelho, grandson of the troubadour João Soares Coelho. Named in the books of lineages as Estêvão Coelho de Riba Homem (a place in located in Terras de Bouro, which was donated by Afonso III to his grandfather), he was the son of Pero Coelho, who was for some time King Denis’ meirinho-mor, and would have been born on the last quarter of the 13th century. Documented starting in 1305, his troubadourean activity should then have occurred in the first decades of the 14th century, that is, in the final period of the Galician-Portuguese school. He was married to Maria Mendes Petite, there being reports of his establishment in the mouth of the river Douro region. He probably died of a relatively young age, maybe around 1330, the year his wife signs a land-swapping document in which Estevão Coelho is no longer mentioned.Bibliographic references
