O trovador gostaria de saber qual de dois males acham os apaixonados o pior: ter o apaixonado de partir, indo morar para longe da sua senhora, não a podendo ver nunca; ou viver perto dela mas não lhe ousar falar.A primeira situação é descrita mais em detalhe na 2ª estrofe, enquanto a outra situação é descrita na 3ª. Na 4ª estrofe, infelizmente incompleta, o trovador confessa que, no seu caso pessoal, viveu ambas as situações. E é por isso que afirma, na finda, que não sabe escolher qual delas é a pior.
