Nesta bela cantiga da amor, ao mesmo tempo simples e retoricamente muito elaborada (com recurso a palavra-rima e múltiplas rimas derivadas, ou mozdobres), Pero da Ponte exprime o seu (impossível) desejo de vingar-se daquela que sempre o tratou mal, pagando-lhe na mesma moeda: deixando de a amar, procurando o seu mal e fazendo-a sofrer. Mas é este um desejo impossível, até porque a culpa é do seu próprio coração, que o fez desejar quem nunca o desejou. Sem poder dormir, só lhe resta pedir a Deus que desampare quem sempre o desamparou e lhe dê a ele a capacidade para a perturbar um pouco - e assim já dormiria. Ou pelo menos que lhe desse coragem para falar com ela.A cantiga é também tematicamente original, na medida em que a tradicional resignação do trovador face ao sofrimento que lhe inflige a sua senhora, elemento tópico da cantiga de amor, é aqui declaradamente substituído pelo desejo de vingança, Note-se ainda a rara variação que ocorre, em estrofes alternadas, no 1º verso do refrão.
