João Servando

Medieval minstrel

Bibliographic notes

Nothing is known about this author, besides the data that can be retrieved from his name and also his compositions, in which he sings the hermitage of the homonymous saint, S. Servando.
It’s possible, then, that he was natural of Muiños, in the province of Ourense, where there’a a chapel dedicated to S. Servando de Prazos, in the parish of Santa Maria de Barxeles1.
From his satirical songs it may be assumed that he frequented the Castillian court. It’s probable that his poetic and musical activity, like the other minstrels accompanying him in the songbooks, took place in the mid-13th century.
